CLC hosts transformation

Central Lakes College provides membership on the Crow Wing County Human Rights Commission who will be sponsoring the 'Lakes Area Anti-Racism Study-Dialogue Circle' from October to February. The Brainerd campus of CLC provides meeting space for Lakes Area ASDIC meetings in E338, from 5-8:30 p.m. on Thursdays: Oct. 28, Nov. 4, 11, and 18, Dec. 2, 9 and 16, Jan. 6, 13, 20 and 27 and Feb. 3. The goal is to make this area a better place for all people to live. Herbert Perkins and Margery Otto, developers and facilitators of the ASDIC Metamorphosis Program, met with about 20 Lakes Area community leaders on May 20, 2010 to begin a conversation on race. Attendees agreed that this would be a great program for our area. The ASDIC program offers a carefully designed process for anti-racist transformation of relationships and institutions. The core experience is the workshop for a group of 12 to 15 people who meet once a week for 12 weeks. Two trained ASDIC facilitators lead each Circle. The Circle experience follows a carefully structured curriculum of dialogue topics, exercises and readings. Over the course of a Circle, participants read a wide range of written works, consisting of over 450 pages, which builds knowledge of the history and continuing institutional and systemic forms of racism. This study enhances their ability to articulate key issues and to be effective change agents. Latest tool

The Central Lakes College Welding and Fabrication program wants the world to know it has an industry-style tool helpign prepare CLC stduents for employment where the high-tech CNC plasma cutting table is part of the production process. The programmable device designs parts and cuts them for whatever calibrations the operator wants. A USB plug-in is part of th4 function. With the education discount, CLC was able to procure the unit for about $40,000, said instructor Michael Reeser. The PCinterface for aligning and cutting offers a variety of functions that perform much more sophisticated maneuvers than the previous plasma welder used for several years in the program. "We are certain our students will have better skills to apply on Day One at a facility where this newer plasma cutter is a mainstay in production," reeser said. There are about a half dozen in use at Central Minnesota industries. The St. Cloud-based Central McGowan welding distributor arranged for the installation and training for CLC faculty to ensure the optimal learning for CLC students. A service center at Little Falls provides ready access to whatever questions arise for students using the outstanding new tool.

Cards defeat Raiders

The Hibbing Cardinals defeated the Central Lakes College Raiders in volleyball Wed., Sept. 8 on the Raider court. In the North Division matchup Coach Jane Peterson tried drastic changes as the hosts feel behind 11-1 in the first game. She pulled starting sophomore setter Rachel Pfeffer and mixed the lineup in search of a winning combination. But the Raiders dropped the first game 25-14 on their way to a 3-1 loss in the match. Melissa Widman knocked out seven kills along with Kirstie Grill (left) to lead the offensive attack. After replacing Pfeffer, Jonica Swanson finished with 24 set assists. Megan Rakow scooped out 14 digs, and Jenna Terhaar and Katie Hochsprung led the defensive attack at the net with seven combined block attempts. Late in Game Two (a 25-22 loss) and throughout Game Three the defense shored up. The Raiders were able to be in the right spot at the net to disrupt the powerful Cardinal hitting game, winning that third game, 25-20, but they dropped the fourth one, 25-15, to leave them at 5-3 heading to Willmar Saturday for the Ridgewater Invitational.

Ag & Energy Center news

From AgriNews
If there was an award for traveling the longest distance to Staples' Agriculture and Energy Center field day, Loren Forrest of Luverne would be a strong contender. Forrest made the five- hour trip recently to learn more about miscanthus. The plant is one of several energy crops in trial plots at the Central Lakes College's Ag and Energy Center. The innovative farmer is growing the crop near Luverne but has plans to expand its production in South Dakota. The key to the Staples research is the soil. The center and surrounding area has sandy soils. So does the area in South Dakota where Forrest may grow more miscanthus. He was interested in how the crop thrives in sandy soils and what researchers have discovered about the crop's production. Forrest also gained an insight to a variety of crops including camelina, prairie cordgrass, switchgrass and more. "After years of work, we want you to ask the question: Is an energy crop something to consider for your farm?" said center director Bob Schafer. "We believe it is. It's a way to diversity your income."

Golf

The CLC men's and women's golf teams don't have a single player from last year's teams. But the Raiders hope to be competitive in the 2010 season, which opened Sept. 1 as they hosted a match they won over Hibbing in men's play, 333-376 at the Legacy. The next outing is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 7 in the Ridgewater Invitational in Willmar. On the men's side, sophomore Paul Albrecht of Woodbury transferred from Century College, which dropped its golf program. Albrecht helped Century finish second in last year's Minnesota College Athletic Conference and Region 13 championships. In his CLC debut, Albrecht was runner-up by a str0ke to teammate, freshman Jared Cowden of West Fargo, N.D., who took medalist honors with an 80. Cpmpleting the men's roster are freshmen John Sund, West Fargo, N.D.; Cody Cederberg, Hawley; Nicholas Smith (Brainerd Dispatch photo), Perham; and Tim Thorson, Brainerd. Last year, the Raider men finished fifth at the state and regional, one of the lowest finishes in program history. The women's team currently has only freshman Dayna Pearson of Aitkin on the roster, according to The Brainerd Dispatch. Last year's team won the state and regional. Morgan Morris of CLC was the medalist against Hibbing Sept. 1 with a 105, reports the MCAC.

THIEF RIVER FALLS - Dominique Corder hit Tyler Erickson (left) on a 17-yard touchdown pass for the only points in the Central Lakes College Raiders 7-0 victory over the Northland Pioneers Saturday. Erickson caught five passes for 68 yards and Corder threw for 136 yards and rushed for 54 more as the Raiders improved to 2-0. The Raiders outgained Northland 280-83, as the CLC defense forced three turnovers. "Our offense struggled to turn drives into points even though we dominated in plays ran and total yards," said Head Coach Greg Medeck. Jordan Laroche and Kaleb Anderson both picked off passes and Avery Smith recovered a fumble and recorded 1.5 sacks. Antoine Gardner and Jordan Moll each had a sack. CLC played well defensively, limiting the Pioneers to 86 total yards. The Raiders held Northland to 62 yards rushing.
