Tim Tingelstad of Bemidji, a family court judge in Minnesota, was a guest speaker in one Central Lakes College class on Feb. 26. He was invited to speak to students in the State and Local Government class taught by Steve Wenzel. Tinglestad was a 2008 candidate for a seat on the Minnesota Supreme Court. Running against Justice Paul Anderson in the November general election, he lost to the incumbent by 61%-39% margin. The race is a non-partisan contest for a six-year term on the court. One of the key positions Tingelstad is advocating for continuing to elect judges in Minnesota. According to Tingelstad, "The original intent of the Minnesota Constitution was for the people to elect our judges, and for the governor to appoint judges only when vacancies arise between elections." He is opposed to the Commission-selection, political appointment method of judicial selection.
