The Minnesota State High School Baseball Coaches Association on Oct. 30 honored Central Lakes College head baseball coach Pat Held of Motley as recipient of the 2010 Dick Siebert Award. It is given, in memory of the legendary U of M Gopher baseball coach considered to be the "father of baseball" in Minnesota, to a coach who has "served Minnesota high school baseball with distinction, professionalism, involvement, and longevity." Pat graduated from St. John’s Prep School in 1969 and from St. John’s University in 1973. He started coaching while in college with the St. Augusta Summer Recreation program in his hometown and also coached the St. Augusta American Legion team. Pat coached in the Staples summer recreation program. Pat also coached the Staples VFW, American Legion, and Babe Ruth teams and the Motley American Legion team. Pat was head coach at Motley and Staples-Motley High Schools for 25 years. He was Staples-Motley High School's head coach from 1989-96. From 1996-2005 he was a volunteer assistant coach for CLC. In 2004 he returned to S-M to coach varsity and junior varsity teams until 2009 when he was hired by CLC. Pat was also a head coach for both boys and girls basketball teams at Motley. He has coached in some capacity for 41 years. Pat was named Motley Teacher of the year in 1983 and retired in 2007 after 34 years teaching history and social studies. The award was presented at the MSHSBC hall of fame banquet at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Minneapolis, where Pat was accompanied by his wife Carolyn.
