The Hibbing Cardinals defeated the Central Lakes College Raiders in volleyball Wed., Sept. 8 on the Raider court. In the North Division matchup Coach Jane Peterson tried drastic changes as the hosts feel behind 11-1 in the first game. She pulled starting sophomore setter Rachel Pfeffer and mixed the lineup in search of a winning combination. But the Raiders dropped the first game 25-14 on their way to a 3-1 loss in the match. Melissa Widman knocked out seven kills along with Kirstie Grill (left) to lead the offensive attack. After replacing Pfeffer, Jonica Swanson finished with 24 set assists. Megan Rakow scooped out 14 digs, and Jenna Terhaar and Katie Hochsprung led the defensive attack at the net with seven combined block attempts. Late in Game Two (a 25-22 loss) and throughout Game Three the defense shored up. The Raiders were able to be in the right spot at the net to disrupt the powerful Cardinal hitting game, winning that third game, 25-20, but they dropped the fourth one, 25-15, to leave them at 5-3 heading to Willmar Saturday for the Ridgewater Invitational.
